John is a writer originally from Arizona, a recent fellow at Juilliard’s Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program, and the recipient of the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award at Vineyard Theatre. 

His play Wet Brain (Playwrights Horizons + MCC) won the OBIE Award for Best Direction and Creative Team and the L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award. Additionally, it was nominated for 8 Lucille Lortel Awards as well as nods from the Outer Critics Circle, The Drama League, and The Relentless Award. Other recent plays include Scene Partners (Vineyard Theatre) starring Dianne Wiest, and Man Cave (Page 73).

From 2007-2017 he produced and created devised performances using in-process text on queer themes with PTW, his non-profit theatre group, presenting both in Phoenix and NYC shows including CREAM!, God Hates This Show: Shirley Phelps-Roper in Concert Live from Hell, and SHOTS: A Love Story.

Additional honors include the Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award, the Rita and Burton Goldberg Playwriting Prize, a MacDowell Fellowship, a SPACE on Ryder Farm Creative Residency, and the 2017 Page 73 Playwriting Fellowship.
